About.... Martha Ansara was a resident of Balmain from 1969 to 2000, mother of actor Alice Ansara who was well known around the village as a performer in the amazing plays staged by Birchgrove Primary in 1989-1993. The police intervened and the screenings resumed underground.

As a professional oral historian, she has contributed nearly 100 oral histories and interviews to the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) and was the founding convenor of the Film & Broadcast Industries Oral History Group, closely associated with the NFSA. She has worked as a project assessor for the Australian Film Commission and other screen organizations, as a film valuer and as a lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney, the Australian Film Television & Radio School and elsewhere. Even better
"The debate may be about quality, but what's really lacking is equity.
Whatever happens next in the ongoing school funding saga one thing is sure: the Gonski review has already changed the debate about how we should provide and support schools. It has established beyond doubt that our public/private framework of schools is sick and that inequity of student outcomes is the lingering symptom. Radical surgery is needed.?

About the Balmain Institute

E-mail Print PDF

  • Promoting policy discourse on the Balmain Peninsula and beyond

The Balmain Institute has been formed to get people talking about ideas.  There are many talented people in our community, but few places where new ideas can be tested with an audience.  The Balmain Institute fills that gap.

The Institute will conduct a regular series of public forums on topics ranging from local councils' roles in the arts, to WikiLeaks, to a carbon tax, or the spread of democracy in the Middle East.  Whatever interests you.

For some forums, we'll have well-known speakers, but for others we'll invite anyone who's interested to write up a note on a chosen topic, and then choose the best four authors to present their views.  If you want to be heard, these forums are for you.  And if you just want to listen, that's fine too.

We

  • Promote policy discussions, social issues, books and publications on the Balmain Peninsula and beyond
  • Celebrate Balmain's peninsula and Leichhardt heritage
  • Welcoming new members contributing to being like-minded people together

Over time, we hope the Balmain Institute can become a prestigious venue for the development and presentation of new ideas in public policy, in promoting punlic debate and discussion, a meeting place like-minded people.

Welcoming members

Membership is open to anyone, at only $20 pp.  Contact Garry McDougall on (02) 9810 3695 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
